CM okays Telugu in Hebrew University

HYDERABAD: The stage is all set for the introduction of courses in Telugu language for the students of Hebrew University in Israel. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has, in principle, cleared a proposal put forth by Potti Sriramulu Telugu University Vice-Chancellor A. Manjulatha who said that the university received communication from the Hebrew University expressing its willingness to start Telugu language course. The process would require budgetary sanction of Rs. 10 lakh.

Accepting the request, Dr. Reddy wanted the university authorities to expedite the modalities involved and put up the issue for clearance. He was speaking at a meeting organised in connection with the presentation of the first ‘Mandali Venkata Krishna Rao Cultural Award’ to Malaysian Telugu Association founder general secretary Madini Soma Naidu here on Saturday. The annual award, presented to mark Venkata Krishna Rao’s 81st birth anniversary, carries a citation and cash of Rs. 20,000. It is instituted by the International Telugu Centre (ITC) of Telugu University in association with SK Foundation, a Visakhapatnam-based cultural organisation.

Recalling the services rendered by the former Cultural Affairs and Education Minister, Dr. Reddy said the ITC would forthwith be named after Venkata Krishna Rao and the Government would shortly constitute a House Committee to look into the affairs of Telugus living outside the State and abroad.

Legislative Council chairman A. Chakrapani, Ms. Manjulatha and Mr. Somanaidu recalled that it was with the initiative of Venkata Krishna Rao that the first world Telugu conference was held in Andhra Pradesh in 1975 while he played an active role in ensuring the success of the conference held in Malaysia in the 1980s.

In addition to language, Venkata Krishna Rao earned the reputation as “Divi Seema Gandhi” for the services he rendered to the cyclone-affected Divi Seema region in 1977. Animal Husbandry Minister Mandali Buddha Prasad and others were present.
