CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday stressed the need for spreading scientific and rationalist ideas to help the people, more particularly the youth, to steer clear of superstitious beliefs. Releasing Anal moochu, a collection of poems authored by former Minister K.Vezhavendan and two other books at a function here, Mr.Karunanidhi said the poet had not deflected from the path laid down by Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periy ar E.V.Ramasamy and the late Chief Minister C.N.Annadurai. Highlighting the significant contribution of the Dravidian movement to society, the author through some of his poems had expressed anguish over the existence of superstitious beliefs among people despite the rationalist and scientific ideas spread by these leaders, Mr.Karunanidhi said. He cautioned the people against the attitude of a small section in society pouring scorn on Tamils and the Tamil language. Such an approach should not be ignored as it was akin to a small spark which could reduce a big palace to ashes, he said. Mr. Karunanidhi appealed to public speakers to create awareness among the people of scientific developments, as they were able to communicate in simple language. Former Governor of Mizoram A. Padmanabhan appealed to the Chief Minister to arrange for translation of Tamil classics into other languages. Ponnambala Adigal of Kunrakudi said humanism was the undercurrent of Mr. Vezhavendan’s works. Dravidar Kazhagam president K.Veeramani said the author used his literary skills to transform society. Mr.Vezhavendan said he drew inspiration from Anna and Mr. Karunanidhi to pen poems.
