TIRUNELVELI: The Department of Health Services will soon appoint medical officers in government hospitals (GHs) and primary health centres (PHCs) across the State to provide medical assistance to the less privileged, Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said here on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters after a review meeting, Mr. Ramachandran said the State Government had appointed 2,500 doctors after it assumed office in May 2006.
The number of vacancies and the actual requirement in the hospitals and PHCs were being studied to determine the number of medical officers to be recruited. “We’ve contacted all district administrations and health officials and all government hospitals and PHCs will soon have adequate number of doctors to give quality medical assistance to the poor,” he said.
While the infrastructure in government hospitals was being given a facelift, the quality of food provided to patients would also be improved.
Renovation planned
PHCs across the State would be renovated soon and provided with adequate men and machinery.
He said technicians for operating the CT scan machine in the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital would be available round-the-clock. He said hospitals would be equipped with digital X-ray equipment to avoid X-ray film shortage. The number of heart surgeries being performed in the government hospitals should go up substantially.
Appeal to doctors
During the meeting with doctors, the Minister urged them to make use of the facilities available in government hospitals to ensure that the poor got quality health care.
