“Jayalalithaa statement on check dam has no basis”
Special Correspondent
CUDDALORE: The statement of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa that the Karnataka Government proposes to construct a check dam across the Pennar at Mugalur is without any basis, Minister for Public Works Department Durai Murugan said here on Saturday.
The Minister said on the Sajanpur-Hospet National Highway 207, about six kilometres from the Tamil Nadu border, there was a steep curve. Officials of the Karnataka Highways Department and the Public Works Department had gone there to inspect the spot to widen it.
Ms. Jayalalithaa had misconstrued it as a Karnataka Government move to build a check dam at the spot. The Karnataka Government had denied it.
Mr. Durai Murugan said issuing such a statement without verifying the facts would create confusion, and therefore, he condemned it. It was tantamount to blowing a non-issue out of proportion.
He said Ms. Jayalalithaa, who enjoyed the status of a Minister, could have contacted him at least over phone to ascertain the facts.
The Minister further said he was quite familiar with the issues relating to Cuddalore and Villupuram districts and therefore, he had organised a seminar after a gap of 17 years to address them.
Backward Classes Welfare Minister M.R.K.Panner Selvam voiced his displeasure over the poor turnout of farmers. He said only the leaders of the farmers’ association seemed to have come. When the seminar was exclusively organised to solve irrigation problems, how could the farmers stay away from the event, he asked.
