NEW DELHI: Woman Grandmaster Swati Ghate claimed an International Master norm and Amruta Mokal, her compatriot from Pune, achieved a Woman International Master norm in the Biel Masters chess tournament at Biel on Friday. Swati finished the 11-round event with six points to meet the requirements while Amruta garnered 4.5 points. Indian spearhead Parimarjan Negi, seeded 17th, ended up 20th after beating Switzerland’s Claude Landenbergue for a tally of seven points. Fellow Grandmasters Deepan Chakkravarthy matched Parimarjan’s score and took the 22nd spot. Russian GM Mikhail Ulibin won the title with 8.5 points. Meanwhile, in Badalona, Spain, lone Indian K. Priyadarshan caused the upset of the second round of the 33rd Badalona International Open when he accounted for fourth-seeded Cuban Grandmaster Carmenates Holden Hernandez. The results (11th round): Misho Cebalo (Cro, 6.5) drew with S. Arun Prasad (6); Claude Landenbergue (Sui, 6) lost to Parimarjan Negi (7); Deepan Chakkravarthy (7) bt Suvrajit Saha (6); D. Harika (6) lost to Mikhail Klenburg (Ukr, 7); S wati Ghate (6) drew with Romain Edouard (Fra, 6); S. Meenakshi (6) drew with Inna Gaponenko (Ukr, 6); Amruta Mokal (4.5) drew with Roland Senn (Sui, 4.5). Indians’ standings: 20. Parimarjan, 22. Deepan, 35. Arun, 42. Swati, 43. Suvrajit, 44.
