Bangalore: The State Government has set aside Rs. 6 crore for the Karnataka Institute of Diabetology in Bangalore and it will come up in this financial year, Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya has said. Announcing this at the inauguration of the Third Annual Conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes-Karnataka Chapter, Dr. Acharya said the institute would focus on prevention, control and treatment of diabetes and also carry out research in the area. He called for public-private partnership for effective running of the institute. More research was needed to go into the inherent genetic make up of Indians which was supposed to make them more susceptible to diabetes. “Research in diabetes should also look into effective prevention techniques and also to make the treatment of diabetes more cost-effective and less painful,” he said. Cause for concern
The major cause for concern was that diabetes was increasing in the rural and younger population. The cost of control of the disease had been going up over the years and there was significant economic burden not just on the family of the affected, but also society. P. Ravikumar, Secretary (Cooperation), said research in diabetes should look into bringing down not just the cost of treatment, but also the screening and diagnosis of the disease. He said that screening facilities for diabetes should be made available at the primary health centre level so that people in rural areas could also access such facilities and there was early detection.
