MADURAI: In order to ensure effective implementation of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the Government has decided to create the post of Chief Educational Officer (CEO) in all districts to exclusively manage the scheme. The SSA is currently being monitored by regular CEOs in the districts. A senior SSA official told ‘The Hindu’ on Sunday that the Government Order has been issued and the postings were expected in a week. “The post of Assistant District Programme Coordinator (ADPC) is being upgraded as CEO and postings will be made for all districts on seniority basis,” the official said. According to School Education Department authorities here, the CEOs, who were also the district programme coordinators, were finding it difficult to manage both responsibilities in view of increasing workload. “Work related to examinations, school inspection, etc., is becoming enormous. So the Government is appointing separate officers to look after the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan activities,” the authorities said. The SSA programme, funded by the State and Centre, is aimed at providing quality basic education with focus on children in classes one to eight. It would also enhance the infrastructure by constructing additional classrooms and improving basic amenities. In Madurai district, 230 block resource teacher educators were imparting training to teachers associated with the SSA. The budget allocation for the district (2007-08) was Rs. 22 crore, officials said.
