Keshava, troupe to perform today

MYSORE: Dancer D. Keshava and his troupe will perform at a programme organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture in association with Kannada Sahrudaya Balaga and CFTRI at the International Food Technology Training Centre (IFTTC) at the auditorium of CFTRI,on Monday.

Director, CFTRI, V. Prakash will preside over the programme and Gouri Kuppuswamy will be the chief guest.

Mr. Keshava, who is from Mysore, is one among a select band of male Bharatanatyam dancers in India.

Training

He trained under Venkatalakshmamma, dancer-teacher of the Mysore style.

He has also been trained in various classical and folk dance forms under other gurus.

First male dancer

He was the first male dancer to secure first rank in Vidwath examination in 1973 in Karnataka and was honoured by Mysore University with the title “Nrityavisharada” for securing the first rank in diploma and gold medal for his degree in 1975.

Mr. Keshava has also been practising yoga since his childhood — first with his father and later under the direction of Desikacharya.

He has studied singing and acting and has learnt the mridagam and veena as subsidiary subjects at the university.

School for dance

“Kalasri”, the first-ever school for Indian classical dance and yoga was founded in 1976 in Basel by Mr. Keshava and Esther Jenny.

This institution is recognised and greatly appreciated by the Swiss Cultural Department.

Promoting Indian art

For the past 30 years, Mr. Keshava has been promoting Indian art and culture in Switzerland and has won the hearts of both critics and dance learners.Mr. Keshava’s book on Indian dance “Bharatiya Nritya Sampradayagalu” has been published by the University of Mysore.
