RTC sanctions 200 new buses for North Andhra

VISAKHAPATNAM: The APSRTC has sanctioned 200 new buses for four North Andhra districts in addition to 85 already allotted for the current financial year.

Talking to reporters for the first time after assuming charge as the Executive Director of Vizianagaram and Vijayawada zones, S. Dharma Reddy said on Sunday that the Government had cleared the proposal to induct 2,000 buses all over the State during current year. He said the new buses were likely to be taken on hire from private owners as part of policy to cut down maintenance cost.

Earlier on the day, he inaugurated a non-stop super luxury bus to Kakinada. He said hired buses would enable the corporation to save Rs.1.50 per kilometre. He said most of the new buses would be deployed in the rural areas under ‘Palle Velugu’ programme.

Mr. Reddy said that for the first time in the history of the corporation, so many buses were being acquired in one go and declared that their priority would be on improving passenger amenities, ensuring punctuality and upgrading the old buses with a completely new-look.

Notification

A notification would be issued in two to three days seeking expression of interest to supply buses on hire from private owners. The regional offices concerned had already identified the routes where the buses would be deployed.

To a question, he disclosed that the Vizianagaram zone had earned a profit of Rs.10 crores during the first quarter. APSRTC Visakhapatnam Regional Manager N. Venkateswara Rao was also present.
