HELPFUL: The Minister for Public Health K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran releasing voucher in Tirunelveli on Saturday.

TIRUNELVELI: To take poor pregnant women in remote villages to the nearby hospital for delivery and provide perfect medical assistance in time, the Department of Health has introduced a special coupon, with which women with labour pain can safely travel to and from the hospital without spending money.

Launching the ‘reproductive and child health free travel voucher’ for pregnant women’ here on Saturday, the Minister for Health, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, after chairing a meeting to review the performance of hospitals under his department, told reporters that the State Government was keen on increasing the number of deliveries in the Government Hospitals and Primary Health Centres across the district by ensuring superior facilities and quality health care.

Bringing the incidence of mortality of mothers and babies in Government Hospitals after delivery to zero was the target of Department of Health and hence, the Government had introduced this voucher, the Minister said. The coupon would be made available in the Government Hospitals and Primary Health Centres and given to the pregnant women after the sixth month when they come to the hospital for routine health check-up. When the labour pain starts, the relatives of the pregnant women can call toll-free 1056 for ambulance service, now available in all blocks after the health system project and reproductive and child health phase II was executed recently.

After taking pregnant women to hospital and bringing them back home following the delivery, the voucher should be handed over to the ambulance driver. The driver would be paid the fare by the Department of Health Services on production of the token.
