Police suspect ULFA’s hand

Attempt to trigger blast inside Sonari police station

One person held in connection with Sonari blast

Guwahati: Eighteen persons (33, according to PTI) were injured in Assam on Sunday in three blasts, suspected to have been triggered by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

Two occurred in Sivasagar district and the other at Agia in Goalpara district.

Police said 12 persons were injured in the blast at the daily market in Agia around 6.30 p.m. when it was packed with buyers.

Within 10 minutes

Earlier in the morning six were injured in two separate blasts in Sivasagar district. The first occurred at Sonari near the local police station around 8.15 a.m. Five persons were injured.

About 10 minutes later another occurred at the ASTC bus stand in Tiniali injuring one person.

The police suspect that the blasts were triggered by the ULFA, as usual, to signal its presence in the run-up to the Independence Day every year.

Sivasagar Superintendent of Police Shymal Saikia told The Hindu that at Sonari, militants planned to trigger the blast inside the police station.

A hand-cart vendor, selling vegetables, tried to enter the premises but he was not allowed by the guard on duty.

Later, he took the cart to the nearby market place, where a crude bomb kept concealed under the vegetables went off injuring five persons.

Youths instruct vendor

The police arrested Kala Mian, who masqueraded as the vegetable vendor. He said two youths handed over the vegetable sacks and instructed him to take the cart inside the station.

Cycle bomb

The SP said the second blast was caused by a crude bomb planted on a cycle parked in front of a hotel. One person sustained injuries.
