Merit scholarships distributed

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: About 530 merit scholarships, worth over Rs.6.29 lakh, were distributed to underprivileged college students at the 32 annual scholarship distribution function of the Rajasthani Association, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthani Educational Trust on Sunday.

The association commenced its project by providing scholarships to eight students in 1976, said K. Subhashchand Ranka, chairman of the scholarship committee. “This year, we received 867 applications,” he said.

Over the last four years, at least 500 students have received scholarships amounting to more than Rs.5 lakh each year. The recipients include students from Engineering and Polytechnic colleges besides students from Arts and Science streams.

The association also donates books in over 2,000 colleges every year. It has built a dharmashala for cancer patients visiting Chennai for treatment, maintains a Corporation playground in Sowcarpet and has nurtured the aspirations of thousands of sport enthusiasts in that area, Association president Milapchand Jain said.

Law Minister Durai Murugan, who distributed the scholarships, praised the efforts of the association and its members.

He recalled the age-old link between the Jains and the Tamils and said Tamil language owed its grammar and literature to the Jains.
