Youth back in jail

CHENNAI: A 24-year-old youth who had come out of jail on July 31 has allegedly been involved in a robbery and waylaying that landed him back again behind bars.

Police said following complaints of a chain snatching and waylaying reported in Valasaravakkam and Virugambakkam areas, a special team was on the look out for the accused.

During night rounds, police intercepted a youth on suspicion. He identified himself as Nagaraj alias Basha of Avadi and confessed his role in the incidents.

Police recovered a gold chain, a Nokia mobile phone, Rs 250 cash and a wrist watch all valued at Rs 12,000. The accused told the police that he had been released from the Puzhal prisons only four days ago.

After registering a case, police produced him before a city court which remanded him to judicial custody.

In a raid conducted in Kannagi Nagar, police arrested two persons who allegedly planned to rob a bank in Sholinganallur, along with five others who escaped during the raid.

A police press release said that acting on a tip-off, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) Seshasai, Assistant Commissioners Natarajan and Lloyd Chandra and a team of policemen conducted the raid on Sunday morning near Kannagi Nagar arch.

While Mahalingam (40) and Udaya (21) were nabbed, their five other accomplices Nondi Ganesan, Mani alias Veeramani, Victor, Kalki and Vellai Mustafa escaped.

Based on the questioning of the two arrested, police said that the gang had planned to rob a bank in Sholinganallur and waylay small merchants.

After registering cases, police produced them before a city court which remanded them to judicial custody.
