ITF Futures from today

Special Correspondent

LUDHIANA: Ashutosh Singh will have a good chance to improve on his record in the Harvest Academy ITF Futures men’s tennis tournament beginning at Jassowal on Monday.

The 24-year-old player from Delhi has one of the best games in Indian tennis at the moment and he needs to put it all together a lot better than what he dished out in the final of the last event at home on Saturday.

With the champion of the Delhi event, the Chinese Davis Cupper, Sun Peng, having pulled out with a simple fax directed towards the referee on Sunday, the eighth-seeded Ashutosh can actually fancy his chances of mastering the thin field if he puts his mind.

Ashutosh is placed in the third quarter and may not have to break a sweat till the quarterfinals if he plays to potential.

He may meet the second-seeded Wang Yu Jr. of China in a repeat semifinal or perhaps wild card Rohan Gajjar who had teased Sun Peng before bowing out in three sets in the second round last week.

Aqeel favourite

The top-seeded Aqeel Khan of Pakistan will be the favourite to make the final from the top half and he has it in him to win another title on Indian soil. Vijay Kannan should be keen to build on his good form and may perhaps tackle the Pakistan player with competence in a possible semifinals clash.

The seedings: 1. Aqeel Khan (Pak), 2. Wang Yu Jr. (Chn), 3. Vijay Kannan, 4. Aditya Madkekar, 5. Navdeep Singh, 6. Vivek Shokeen, 7. Tatsuma Ito (Jpn), 8. Ashutosh Singh.

The results: Third and final qualifying round: Dong-Whee Choi (Kor) bt Min-Hyoek Cho (Kor) 7-5, 6-4; Gursharan Singh bt Gao Peng (Chn) 4-6, 7-5, 6-3; Eui-Yeol Yang (Kor) bt Rohan Gide 6-4, 6-0; Ashwin Vijayaraghavan bt Jitender Mehlda 6-3, 6-1; Ajai Selvaraj bt Yang Wei-Guang (Chn) 6-3, 6-4; Leandro Ferreira (Bra) bt Shiva Sangwan 6-2, 6-4, Gao Lei (Chn) bt Nikunj Siwach 6-4, 6-3.
