NEW DELHI: Second seed India made a rousing start to its campaign in the World youth (under-16) chess Olympiad by handing out a 4-0 drubbing to 19th seed United States of America in Singapore on Sunday.
The Indian quartet of B. Adhiban, R. Ashwath, S. Nitin and P. Nikhil Shyam won against T. Christian Tanaka, Robert Lau, Jaren Tan and Erin Zhang, in that order.
The results: First round (top 10 tables): Hungary bt Malaysia 2.5-1.5; USA lost to India 0-4; Australia I bt Hong Kong I 4-0; Australia III lost to Uzbekistan 0-4; Switzerland lost to The Philippines 1-3; South Africa lost to Singapore
1 1-3; Iran bt Japan 4-0; Australia IV lost to Turkey 0-4; England bt Korea I 3-1; Sri Lanka II lost to Singapore II 1.5-2.5.
