MLAs seek strict action

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Members cutting across party lines in the Legislative Assembly on Monday urged the State Government to order a probe into recovery of seven aborted foetuses in Bangalore.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, G.V. Sriramreddy (CPI-M) said throwing foetuses in the open space was an offence and the Government should order a crackdown on all private maternity homes, a large number of which were suspected to be conducting illegal abortions. A large number of female foetuses were unearthed in Uttar Pradesh recently, he said.

Law sought

Shakuntala Shetty (BJP) said the State Government had to formulate a law to curb such illegal practices in the wake of reports that the male-female ratio had skewed alarmingly in recent years due to female foeticide. She also appealed to the Government to take stern action against doctors indulging in illegal abortion of foetuses. K. Annadani (JD-S) and Sunita Veerappa Gowda (BJP) too urged the Government to look into the issue seriously.

Three bags, said to be containing foetuses and other material, were found by people in a garbage dump near Jakkarayanakere Grounds in Sriramapuram police station limits on Sunday.

Statement

Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horratti told members that the Government would make a statement on the issue on Tuesday.
