TIRUPATTUR: The 27th death anniversary of police officers who laid down their lives during the naxalite operation at Tirupattur was observed on Monday. W.I. Devaram, former Director-General of Police, took part in the anniversary. In 1980 on August 6, inspector V. Palanisamy of Jolarpet Police Station, C. Murugesan and R.Yesudas, both belonging to Tamil Nadu Special Police Force, were killed in naxalite bomb attack at Tirupattur. In another incident S.Adikesavalu, Head Constable (HC) of North Arcot, was killed while escorting a Naxalite prisoner on June 7, 1981. Mr. Devaram said the sacrifice made by the four police officers was fresh in his memory. He said it was encouraging to see that the policemen were aware of the sacrifice made by the four police officers. It was the 27th anniversary and yet the number of people who paid homage increased each year. Stating that there was no threat from naxalites in the State, the former DGP said that the police had successfully cracked down on Naxalite camps at Uttankarai in 2002-2003. People residing in naxalite-prone areas including Tirupattur gave their full support to the police during the operations. The naxalite operation at Tirupattur had been successful due to the massive support from the public. “At present the police department is in a position to contain the naxalite movement due to the support the police enjoy from the public,” he added. Mr.Devaram said that though the revival of naxalite movement in the State this year had been brought under control, thanks to the efforts of the police. For instance, this year the police cracked down a naxalite training camp at Madurai. The timely action had to be acknowledged. Earlier Mr. Devaram placed a wreath on the canopy in memory of the police officers killed in the naxalite operation. T.K.Raja, Tirupattur MLA, G.Ponnuswamy, District Secretary, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and senior Police officers participated.
