CHAMARAJANAGAR: A woman, said to be in financial distress, strangled her two children and then committed suicide by hanging herself at Kolipalya village in Chamarajanagar taluk on Saturday. The woman has been identified as Rekha (26) and the children as Lakshmi (2) and Varunkumar (5). It is said that Rekha, a native of Harohalli in Kanakapura taluk, married Kalinga of Kolipalya village seven years ago. Difficult times
Neighbours told presspersons that Rekha was depressed as she was finding it difficult to maintain the family after Mr. Kalinga quit his job in a bar and restaurant in Chamarajanagar and joined a course in Mysore. On Sunday morning, Rekha’s in-laws, Mariswamy Gowda and Lakshmamma, who live nearby, noticed that the door of her house had not been opened till 8 a.m. Later, with the help of villagers they broke open the door and found Rekha and her children dead. Mr. Kalinga told presspersons that he reached the village on Sunday morning after his father telephoned him about the tragedy. He said that though the family had financial problems, they were quite happy. He expressed distress that his wife had chosen to take the extreme step. Police complaint
But Rekha’s brother, Manjunath, has lodged a complaint with the East police, Chamarajanagar, against Mr. Kalinga and his parents saying he suspected dowry harassment. The police have registered a case. Mr. Kalinga and his parents were arrested following the complaint. The accused were produced in court and were remanded in judicial custody till August 28.
