under one roof: The newly built Lecture Hall Complex at the National Institute of Technology in Tiruchi.
TIRUCHI: The Lecture Hall Complex on the premises of the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi, constructed recently at a cost of Rs.3 crore has provided the institution the distinction of being the first amongst NITs in the country to have all the under-graduate classes under a single building. The massive building with 30 state-of-the-art classrooms, each with a seating capacity for 90 students, and four large lecture halls, each with a seating capacity of 150 to 200 students, has turned out to be of immense utility to the students. The ambience is enhanced by a large space meant for a lawn that the classrooms encompass. Students enjoy advantage on two counts, as the new complex is situated at a stone’s throw away from their hostels and they are now able to exercise more flexibility in choosing their electives, said the Institute Director M. Chidambaram. Earlier, they had to spend considerable time moving from one department to another that was spaced apart from each other. The Lecture Hall Complex is futuristic in that the classrooms would be able to accommodate the possible increase in the strength of students in the event of implementation of 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, said C. Natarajan, Professor and Head, Department of Civil Engineering and Chairman of the Estate Committee. The existing department-wise buildings where the classes for undergraduate students were held till last year have now been up-graded into research centres. Classes for the PG students and research scholars function there and rooms for the faculty, including about 100 newly appointed teachers over the past couple of years, have also been provided. Constructions of several other buildings were also underway at the campus. Four hostels, each with a capacity to accommodate 220 students and costing Rs.2 crore, are under different stages of construction. In three hostels, two students would be allotted a room while the other hostel where each student would be provided with a room is meant for PG students. Likewise, two large common mess facilities are being created. A building to house a permanent hospital and staff quarters are also under construction. A compound wall running to a length of three kilometres is being erected at an expenditure of Rs.2 crore.
