“Unemployment problem severe in rural areas”

Staff Reporter

DINDIGUL: More investment on irrigation, suitable change in rural credit policy and crop pattern and land use are essential to increase rural employment, said Madhura Swaminathan, Professor, Indian Statistical Institute.

She was delivering Justice V.R. Krisha Iyer Endowment Lecture at Gandhigram Rural University at Gandhigram on Monday.

“Without reversal of current policies, prospects for substantial structural gains for rural employment are bleak. We have to address collapse in public investment, poor planning and investment in criterion of non-farm equipment opportunities and tendency for copping pattern. Decline in investments on irrigation and cut in rural credit policy were main reasons for slump in rural employment.”

Even as the country witnessed an unprecedented high rate of economic growth, there was sharp increase in unemployment at villages. Employment opportunities in rural India had worsened in the 1990s and early 2000s, affecting work and life of millions of people. The process of economic growth did not generate sufficient opportunities for decent work, she said. Unemployment was acute among young people and worst in rural areas.
