‘State guest’ status for Maudany questioned

Staff Reporter

BJP says he is still an accused in 23 criminal cases

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader M.T. Remesh has demanded to know how the State Government extended ‘state guest’ status to People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasir Maudany on his arrival after his release from the Coimbatore jail.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Mr. Remesh alleged that the Government had sent a couple of State cars to the airport to receive Mr. Maudany. Also, Mr. Maudany was given free accommodation at the State-run Mascot Hotel on that day.

The Home and Tourism portfolios are being handled by Kodiyeri Balakrishnan and the Government should disclose whether these facilities were extended to Mr. Maudany on the directive of Mr. Balakrishnan without the knowledge of the Chief Minister, Mr. Remesh said.

If the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) wanted to give a clean chit to Mr. Maudany to smoothen his entry into the Left Democratic Front (LDF), it should foot his bill and not extend such hospitalities at the cost of the people, he argued.

He said Mr. Maudany was still an accused in 23 criminal cases in different areas in the State. Mr Remesh said the three Ministers who had participated in the reception accorded to an person accused in criminal cases had violated their oath of office and secrecy and should step down.

He alleged that the State Government was making covert and overt attempts to withdraw the cases against Mr Maudany, and warned that the BJP would launch agitations if such moves were pursued.
