Treat ITeS/BPO as a new industry: Karnik

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Union Government should treat the ITeS/BPO sector as “a new industry with more employment potential than traditional IT services and software developers” and extend facilities similar to the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), special economic zones (SEZ) and duty drawbacks for export earnings, National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) President, Kiran Karnik, suggested here on Monday.

Inaugurating the two-day Nasscom ITeS-BPO Summit 2007, Mr. Kiran Karnik told delegates that “This sector may generate revenues of $10 billion this year and add two lakh jobs and deserves to be treated as a distinct industry..

Pramod Bhasin, Chairperson, Nasscom ITeS/BPO Forum, and Chief Executive Officer of Genpact, said “ The industry now needs to evolve its own professional standards and ethics to create confidence among client companies overseas, on concerns like data security and uniform service standards. ”.

Ganesh Natarajan, Vice-Chairman, Nasscom, said “The important issues now are to overcome the rupee appreciation by broadening the markets and solving the manpower shortage”.
