Abdul Razak Mohamed, Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, Anna University:
When roads are re-laid, new layers are added without scraping off the old surface. The increased height results in rain water run-off flooding residential colonies. Stormwater drains are important in such places to carry flood waters. If these drains are free of sewage, the flood waters can be directed into rainwater harvesting structures in parks and open spaces in the city. The suburbs need more attention as the infrastructure has not matched the growth rate.
