CHENNAI: The effect of global warming on the climate of India is not so conspicuous, Y.E.A. Raj, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, said on Monday. At a seminar on climate change, he said an analysis of the data for over 100 years revealed that there was no significant trend in the rainfall. As for surface temperature, a very mild trend was perceptible. However, in the case of Chennai, a perusal of the data from 1969 to 2005 indicated an increase in the number of days when the maximum temperature shot up over 40 degree Celsius. Against the mean annual rainfall of 122 cm for Nungambakkam and 132 cm for Meenambakkam, the figures were 140 cm and 143 cm. Of late, more storms crossed the coast of Andhra Pradesh than Tamil Nadu’s, he said. Earlier, delivering the key-note address, R.V. Sharma, Deputy Director-General of Meteorology, said agriculture and healthcare were likely to be affected by the climate change, which might also cause coastal inundation. To tackle the problem, he called for greater interaction among decision-makers and an inter-disciplinary approach. K. S. Neelankantan, Environment Director, inaugurated the seminar, organised by the Department of Planning of Anna University and the local chapter of the Institute of Town Planners. S. Ravi, Dean, School of Architecture of Planning, Anna University; V.M. Marudhachalam, Head of Department (Planning); and R. Ramesh, Director, Institute for Ocean Management, took part in the seminar.
