CHENNAI: Heeding the call of the Uzbek Minister for Light Industries to save the ailing textile units, representatives of the Tirupur Exporters’ Association are headed for Uzbekistan to lend them a helping hand. This is the second visit of the association representatives to Uzbekistan in less than two months. Association president A Sakthivel, industrialists Appu Kutti and Megalamani and SJLP mill owner Jagadeesan will be in Uzbekistan from August 10 to 16. They also plan to meet the Uzbekistan Premier. Recently, Uzbekistan had invited investments in textiles. Indian entrepreneurs have been looking at new avenues to improve trade and increase margin. Uzbekistan fitted the bill, as it shares borders with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The Indian representatives made enquiries about the availability of cotton, the possibility of opening up new facilities or extending a helping hand to the needy units. The positive response from the Indian side enthused Uzbek Light Industries Minister Ruzikulov Rahmatullo to visit Karur, Tirupur and Namakkal during the last week of July this year to interact with mills owners in the south. Incidentally, Uzbekistan is one of the largest cotton producing countries, and the second largest exporter of cotton fibre. The bilateral trade in cotton, trade and silk amount to $500 million a year. “This is an assessment trip that will last for a week. We have identified 4-5 mills for investment. The investment could be done by an individual or a consortia. We are adopting the dual policy of taking over either small and medium enterprises or a large business. However, a collective decision will be taken after visiting these units,” Mr Sakthivel told The Hindu on Monday.
