Nationwide strike by CITU tomorrow
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has given a call for a nationwide strike on Wednesday to seek comprehensive social security legislation for the unorganised sector workers.
CITU president M.K. Pandhe told reporters here on Monday that the Bill, in its present form, was unacceptable. The UPA was making a mockery of its commitment of a comprehensive protective legislation for the agricultural workers and unorganised sector workers, he said.
“The Bill on unorganised sector cleared by the Union Cabinet contains nothing substantive for the workers and it is nothing but a bluff to the 93 per cent of the workforce in this sector, who contribute 65 per cent of the country’s increasing GDP,” he said.
The sponsoring committee of the central trade unions is scheduled to meet here on August 19 to finalise the nationwide action plan against the proposed Bill.
The CITU, along with other trade unions, has been demanding two separate and comprehensive bills for agricultural workers and the unorganised sector workers.
