Collector S.S. Jawahar.
MADURAI: Expeditious disposal of petitions, coupled with constant monitoring and a positive approach, has won Madurai the top slot in the State with regard to redressal of public petitions referred by the Chief Minister’s cell. The Collector, S.S. Jawahar, received the award for excellence from the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, in Chennai on July 31 for effective disposal of petitions in terms of quality and quantity. A large number of petitions are received by the CM’s cell at the Secretariat which are forwarded to the respective Collectors for disposal. An online mechanism has been created where details of the action taken and disposal are entered on a regular basis. Considering various parameters for petition disposal, Madurai was adjudged the best while Vellore and Cuddalore districts took the next two places. “Sincere efforts are taken when it comes to disposal of petitions. Even if there is the slightest possibility of redressing a petitioner’s grievance, we do it. A majority of the grievances pertains to old age pension, free house site pattas and relief under various welfare schemes. There is positive action in at least 40 per cent of the petitions,” Mr. Jawahar told ‘The Hindu’ here on Tuesday. A team led by a Special Deputy Collector handles petitions received at the weekly grievance day meeting every Monday. A mass contact programme is also held in one village every month where the Collector and department heads take on the spot action on petitions. “It is like taking the Collectorate to the village doorstep. There is a time-bound disposal of petitions and every petitioner is informed of the action taken at different stages,” Mr. Jawahar added. The district administration now plans to establish a video-conferencing system using ‘wi-fi’ technology for online redressal of grievances of villagers in remote areas.
