Education Minister M.A. Baby
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education Minister M.A. Baby has said that the Government will announce the new schedule of admission to the self-financing colleges in the State on Thursday. Talking to presspersons after a meeting with representatives of the managements of self-financing colleges here on Tuesday, the Minister said the Government was fully confident of completing the major portion of the entire admission process before the end of this month. Mr. Baby said the Government would not go in appeal against the High Court order staying some portions of the agreement arrived at between the managements of majority of the self-financing colleges and the Government. Since the Division Bench of the High Court was scheduled to hear the case again on August 17, it would be inappropriate to file an appeal in the Supreme Court at this stage, the Minister said. He, however, said that the beginning of the admission process would not have to wait till the court took up the case on August 17. “We can start the admission process prior to that within the provisions of the court order,” he said. The managements clarified at the meeting that the revised admission process would begin within a couple of days, but it would be subject to the approval of the court. They hoped that the committee headed by Justice P.A. Muhammed would come up with a revised fee structure for their colleges within a week’s time. The committee had made it clear that the fee structure announced earlier by it was `provisional,’ and “we hope it would take into account the estimates given by us before announcing the revised fee structure,” the managements said. Both the Minister and the management representatives arrived at a consensus on the need for completing the admission process without further delay in accordance with the spirit of the agreement arrived at earlier. The Minister said the outcome of the discussions would be placed before the Cabinet on Wednesday for approval. He also disclosed that the Government was planning to hold discussions even with those managements who had not so far signed an agreement (with the Government).
