APMC traders withdraw strike
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) traders withdrew their strike on Tuesday evening after meeting Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.
Chairman of the APMC Committee of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry Ramesh Lahoti said the strike was withdrawn because the Chief Minister had agreed to the demand to constitute a committee to look into the amendments to the APMC Act. The committee, to be headed by Agricultural Marketing Minister Sharanabasappagouda Darshanapur, will have representatives from traders, trade bodies, farmers, workers and political parties. It will study the amendments and arrive at a conclusion. Mr. Lahoti said the understanding was that the Act, if it got the Governor’s assent, would be kept in abeyance till the committee took a final decision.
Earlier in the day, traders took out a procession from Shivananda Circle to Kumarakrupa Guest House on Tuesday. They staged a demonstration near the Guest House.
Minister for Agricultural Marketing Darshanapur, who came to pacify the agitating traders, had to retreat in the face of their ire.
Vegetable prices were high on Tuesday and were comparable to those on Monday.
