Rain fury: A house which collapsed in heavy rain at Purad Oni in Haveri on Tuesday.
HAVERI: Incessant rain has been lashing Haveri district since Saturday. The Tungabhadra, Kumudawati and Varada are in spate inundating 2,392 acres of farmland in the district. Low-lying areas have been affected with rainwater entering many houses and forcing people to move to safe places. Official sources said Ranebennur taluk was the worst affected as the Kumudawati joins the Tungabhadra there. The road link between Ranebennur and Tumminakatti village and between Chikkamaganur and Hiremaganur villages had been cut off. Many houses at Masur village in Hirekerur taluk had been inundated. A gruel centre had been set up there for the affected people, the sources said. B.B. Dewoor, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, who is holding additional charge as headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, said Mushtur village and Hale Chandapur villages in Ranebennur taluk had become islands because of the floods. While 12 families at Kuppelur and 15 families at Kavalettu had been shifted to safe places. Five families at Makanur, 10 at Nandihalli, six at Manakur and four at Konanatambige had been shifted to safe places, he said. Meanwhile, there were reports of gastroenteritis at Gudda Anweri village and eight cases of suspected dengue at Nagenahalli village. Officials said that Guilagundi, Mevundi, Shakar and Havaji villages had been partially inundated as the Varada is in spate. One person died in house collapse in the district. The name of the victim has been given as Chanabasavva H. Anweri of Kurtakodihalli in Byadgi taluk. Holiday
Meanwhile, the zilla panchayat on Tuesday decided to declare holidays for schools for two days because of heavy rain. The meeting was chaired by vice-president N.C. Patil.
