Recovery of foetuses: police inquiry on

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok on Tuesday informed the Legislative Assembly that the police had been asked to conduct an inquiry into the recovery of seven aborted foetuses in Bangalore.

Three bags, containing the foetuses and other material, were found by people in a garbage dump near the Jakkarayanakere grounds in Srirampuram police station limits on Sunday.

In a reply to G.V. Sriram Reddy (CPI-M), Mr. Ashok said the police had been instructed to speed up the inquiry to nab those responsible for dumping the material. All nursing homes, hospitals and medical colleges had to dispose of bio-medical waste as laid down in the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

Nursing homes and hospitals had to tie up with contractors dealing with bio-medical waste. The Government would take action against hospitals that had not entered into a tie up with contractors, he said.

Forensic examination of the foetuses had revealed that all of them had congenital abnormalities. There were only seven foetuses, of which five were male and two female. The police were trying to ascertain who had dumped the foetuses, Mr. Ashok said.
