114 backward taluks identified by Nanjundappa panel Rs. 1,571.50 crore earmarked in the current fiscal year
BANGALORE: The State Government has prepared a seven-year plan for implementing various development schemes in 114 backward taluks identified by the High-Power Committee for the Redressal of Regional Imbalances, which was headed by D.M. Nanjundappa. Replying on Tuesday to a debate in the Legislative Assembly on regional imbalances, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said the plan would be implemented from 2007-08 to 2014-15. A sum of Rs. 1,571.50 crore had been earmarked in the Plan outlay in the current fiscal year. The committee submitted its report to the S.M. Krishna Government in 2002-03. Previous governments had not initiated any action to implement the report, he said. The report had recommended to the Government to spend Rs. 31,000 crore to develop 114 backward taluks over an eight-year period. A sum of Rs. 300 crore for irrigation, Rs. 100 crore each for housing and transportation, Rs. 250 crore for power, Rs. 160 crore for rural development, Rs. 75 crore for airports, and Rs. 90 crore for water supply had been earmarked for the year 2007-08, he said. The former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah (Congress) said the Government had neglected the backward taluks and allocated additional funds outside the Plan outlay. M. Mallikarjun Kharge (Congress) said that the 50:20:10 formula suggested by the committee had not been followed while allocating funds to most backward, more backward and backward taluks. ‘Commitment lacking’
Leader of the Opposition N. Dharam Singh said that Government had no political commitment to address the socio-economic problems of backward taluks. The funds allocated were inadequate, he said. Dissatisfied Mr. Yediyurappa’s reply, the Congress members staged a walkout.
