Bangalore: Turning down a demand from several legislators from the Mysore region, the Government on Tuesday ruled out ordering an inquiry into allegations against the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mysore, J. Shashidhara Prasad. Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said the Government had heard only one side and would like to hear the other side before deciding whether an inquiry was required. The legislators who had made the allegations could submit a complaint to the Governor, who was the Chancellor of the universities in the State. The former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah (Congress) and others charged that the Vice-Chancellor had committed irregularities in appointments and promotions. Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar and Minister for Cooperation G.T. Deve Gowda, who also hail from the Mysore region, defended the Vice-Chancellor. Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna said it was improper on the part of the Opposition to level allegations against someone who was not a member of the House. There were heated exchanges between Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Jayakumar, which led to two using unparliamentary language. Speaker Krishna ordered that their outbursts be expunged from the records. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M.P. Prakash said that what Mr. Jayakumar had said was unwarranted and requested Mr. Siddaramiah to ignore it and resume his speech. The Speaker also advised Mr. Jayakumar to maintain decorum in the House.
