KOCHI: The All Kerala Distributors’ Association has decided to launch a protest against companies that have resorted to “discriminatory” action against traditional distributors in favour of new retail monopolies in the country. The decision to protest was taken at a meeting of retailers on Saturday, said P. Venkatarama Iyer, president of the association. The association also declared its support to protests by other trade bodies, workers, cultural activists and political parties against foreign and Indian monopolies. Concessions
The association president also said that production companies were giving several concessions to retail monopolies that were never given to the traditional distributors. There are about 6,000 distributors in Kerala and they stand threatened by the new policies of the companies. Though the new retailers are offering lower prices, it is only for a few products. Their policies will, however, drive millions of traders out of business. The Government should take stock of the economic impact of millions of retailers losing their business. The Government should come forward to make legislations that will protect the traditional retailers, he added.
