VISAKHAPATNAM: The national campaign against Coastal Zonal Management (CZM) notification will organise a nation-wide protest on Thursday, Quit India Day, crying halt to all policies, laws and notifications causing ‘destruction’ of coastal lands, environment, fisheries and natural resources. The decision to go for a national protest was taken at a national consultation organised by National Fish Workers’ Forum in Chennai in the light of renewed efforts by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to dismantle the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) notification 1991and replace it with CZM notification, according to Harekrishna Debnath, chairperson of the union. He said fisher people and coastal communities will defend their lands, environment and resources and would not allow the ‘anti-people CZM’ to be notified or implemented. Numerous representations had been sent to the Prime Minister, the Minister for Environment and Forests, the Minister for Agriculture, the Secretary, Environment and Forests and the Chief Ministers of coastal states demanding halt of the proposed CZM notification 2007 and stringent implementation of the CRZ notification 1991 in its original form by repealing all the amendments. In spite of repeated requests for immediate consultation with all the stakeholders, the MoEF failed to show any sensitivity, Mr. Debnath alleged. Hence the protest on August 9, the International Day of Indigenous People, to assert their inalienable right on the coastal zone.
