Woman’s death leads to protest at Ongole Government Hospital

Irate relatives stage dharna near Collector’s bungalow


ONGOLE : A 25-year-old woman died here on Monday due to complications developed after family planning operation done at the Government Mother and Child Hospital here leading to protests and agitation by her relatives.

District Collector K Devanand agreed to sanction one house-site for the family in Ongole and two acres of land in their village besides a compensation of Rs 1 lakh from the Central Government.

It is stated that Seshamma of Brahmana Nidamanur village got married to K Sreenivasa Rao of Vijayawada four years ago. She gave birth to a second child at the Government Mother and Child Hospital here on June 28. She underwent minilap operations for family planning at the same hospital on July 23. She was discharged on the same day of operation.

But she soon developed some complications resulting in bleeding. She was admitted to the district hospital here where another operation was performed on August 4. She died at 7.30 pm on Monday.

Compensation

The irate relatives staged a dharna near the Collector bungalow till late last night to protest against the negligent attitude of the doctors which they said led to her death. After protracted negotiations, Mr Devanand agreed to provide the kin with house site and land. He turned down their demand for compensation of Rs. 5 lakhs.

As she died within one month after family planning operation, she is entitled to a compensation of Rs. 1 lakh from the Central Government, said District Medical and Health Officer Bangaru Babu.

The amount would be deposited in the name of the two children, he said.

The Collector also directed the DMHO to sanction Rs. 10,000 to meet the medical bills of the victim.
