dated August 8, 1957: New air routes

Mr. Humayun Kabir, Minister for Civil Aviation, announced in the Lok Sabha on August 6 that the Government of India would give every possible help to State Governments which came forward to form subsidiary air corporations and to private operators who were willing to open new air routes or operate routes where the Indian Airlines Corporation could not function. He made the announcement while intervening in the debate on the demands for grants of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The Government had already written to the States on the question of formation of subsidiary corporations. He said the Government realised that private operators had a definite function to perform. Mr. Kabir recalled that the Estimates Committee on civil aviation had indicated that only about 50 per cent or so of the total non-scheduled traffic could be handled by the Indian Airlines Corporation and that private operators had a definite place for operating air services.
