Letters to the Editor
The article “123: Rethink before we go forward” (Aug. 7) raised some extremely important points. It was by far the most insightful, well-researched and crisply analytical explanation published on the subject. The coming Parliament session should treat the India-U.S. nuclear deal as the most serious business. What we need is not a party-centred debate but one that will take into account all aspects with clear inputs from our scientific community and will be guided by a vision of India’s uncompromising future independence. We are slowly and steadily getting into the well-designed futuristic trap laid by the U.S. for its exclusive objectives, no matter what happens to the rest of the world. Why is our present ruling dispensation failing to understand this?
E.P. Menon,
As for the threats to our independence, in an inter-dependent world independence has a different connotation. For instance, it is not a great expression of independence to conclude a fuel supply agreement with Iran through a pipeline via Pakistan as enforcing such an agreement would be dicey, as the two nations have shown scant respect for international law. One has to deal with international and bilateral situations as they crop up with an open mind.
P.N. Nagarajan,
