Srikrishna report

The Justice Srikrishna Commission report says the December 1992 riots began as a peaceful protest by Muslims and then degenerated into riots. It also holds BJP leader L.K. Advani and his rath yatra responsible for the divisive atmosphere that prevailed then.

It indicted 31 police personnel (from officers to constables) for abetting the rioters. The perpetrators of the 1993 blasts have been awarded various sentences based on the extent of their involvement. But the perpetrators of the riots are still free.

Are not such double standards an insult to our Constitution? When people lose faith in the system, they take the law into their own hands.

G.H. Kaif,
Bhandara

By sending Sanjay Dutt to jail for six years, Justice P.D. Kode has done a remarkable job of upholding equality before the law. He has sent the message that justice will catch up with you however high and mighty you are. But the perception among some that our justice system is selective in punishing criminals cannot be dismissed as baseless.

While justice has been delivered to the blast victims, it has not been done to the victims of the Mumbai riots. No action has been taken on Justice Srikrishna’s report. High-profile politicians including Shiv Sena leaders were indicted by the Commission.

Only when all those named in the report are tried in the same way as the 1993 bombers were, will everyone’s faith in the system be restored.

T.A. Munawardeen,
Tiruvarur
