Amjad Ali Khan, Jasraj to perform in Parliament

NEW DELHI: A special programme will be held on August 15 evening in the Central Hall of Parliament to mark the 60th anniversary of Independence.

Sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan will perform along with sons Amaan Ali Khan and Ayaan Ali Khan and Pandit Jasraj will render “Adhi raat mein suraj” (sun at midnight) and Vande Mataram.

A special poem composed by Javed Akhtar will be recited by him and it will be translated into English by Shabana Azmi, MP.

The programme will begin at 7.30 p.m. and last for 90 minutes.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Vice-President (to be elected on August 10) and President Pratibha Patil will speak on the occasion. They will recall among other things, the great sacrifices made by a whole generation of freedom fighters.

On May 10, the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence was observed with a special programme in the Central Hall.

The programme on August 15 will begin with the playing of the national anthem.

It will be followed by recitation of two favourite “bhajans” of Mahatma Gandhi — “Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram” and “Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye.”
