LUCKNOW: Nearly 30 people were injured, five critically, when the Kanpur-bound 2308 Jodhpur-Howrah Express derailed at the Juhi yard, about 10 km from the Kanpur Central Station, on Tuesday. There were no casualties. The train was coming from Agra when the accident occurred around 11.45 a.m.
Railway sources said the accident could have been caused due to some problem on the track. Senior Railway official S.N. Chak, who reached the accident site, said an investigation had been ordered.
A State Home Department spokesman said here that the accident occurred between Govindpuri and Kanpur Central station.
The train was powered by two engines. As the first one derailed, the second climbed over it. The parcel van, two general coaches and one sleeper coach also derailed. The sources said that as the train was moving slowly, a major disaster was averted. Besides, the parcel van took the initial impact of the derailment.
The injured driver and his assistant were admitted to the Loco Hospital in Kanpur.
District Magistrate of Kanpur Anurag Srivastava said the lower limbs of the critically injured were amputated. Others suffered fracture on their hands and head injuries.
Traffic on the busy electric traction came to a grinding halt following the derailment.
