BANGALORE: The Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), in association with University of Bath (U.K.) and Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics De L’Etat (Italy), is conducting an international symposium on earthen structures between August 22 and 24. Earthen structures comprise buildings made from local earthen materials and are usually traditionally adopted construction modes, which involve minimum energy-intensive processing. Such structures, unlike those constructed by bricks, are recyclable and help in preserving the fertile soil in its native form. These structures have low thermal conductivity, are eco-friendly and provide a healthy environment. According to B.V. Venkatarama Reddy of IISc., Department of Civil Engineering, the symposium provides a platform to discuss earthen structures that offer sustainable alternatives to modern building materials, which are energy intensive and contribute heavily to greenhouse gases. The event will bring together engineers and architects involved in all stages of building construction, researchers and graduate students interested and engaged in the theory and practice of earthen structures. There will be discussions and debates on current research and practices in earthen structures, including materials, building techniques, architecture and building-comfort studies. For more information, log on to www.astra.iisc.ernet.in or contact Prof. Venkatarama Reddy, the Organising Chairman, or Dr. Monto Mani, Organising Secretary at ises2007@civil.iisc.ernet.in
