A positive initiative indeed

Special Correspondent

Success mantra: UNDP Resident Representative Maxine Olson speaking at a programme at Xavier Institute of Management in Bhubaneswar.

BHUBANESWAR: A total of 91 HIV-positive persons, who received formal training in management and acquiring leadership skills, were awarded certificates in ‘leadership and managerial proficiency’ (LAMP) from the Xavier Institute of Management here on Monday. The participants, who took part in the programme in four batches, hailed from different parts of the country, the maximum being from Maharashtra 30 and Orissa 13.

Six-week programme

The six-week LAMP programme was launched seven months ago as a joint initiative of XIMB and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The objective of the project was to empower HIV-positive persons by enriching them in managerial skills in order to help them lead a more meaningful life with self-dignity as well as for advocating the cause of infected people like them. The graduation ceremony started with a symbolic candle procession by the LAMP participants, who entered the auditorium carrying candles which they passed to the faculty and other guests, thus spreading the message behind this programme in the most powerful yet subtle way.

Keeping up with its commitment for the welfare of the society, XIMB had chosen to be a part of this great endeavour, becoming the first partner of UNDP in India.

The male-female ratio of the participants was 41 per cent females and 59 percent males and as regards educational qualification, 37 per cent were under-graduates, 55 per cent were graduates and 5 per cent were post-graduates.

XIMB Director E. Abraham said that the decision of offering the LAMP course to HIV positive persons would surely rank amongst the best decisions that he had taken during his seven-year-long directorship in the institute. “What you have learnt will surely stand you in good stead in all that you will do in life,” he told the participants of the programme.

Representatives from 30 partner organisations like UNDP and National AIDS Control Authority (NACO) attended the convocation function. The felicitation started with awarding the toppers of all the four batches with a citation and cash prize. They were presented by Maxine Olson, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative.
