‘Chalk-out plan to improve quality of education’

Staff Correspondent

Workshop on ‘Quality development of education’ begins

HAMPI: K.V. Narayan, in-charge Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, on Tuesday exhorted the participants of a workshop to spell out clearly the definition of quality and community participation if the quality of education was to be improved in the era of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation.

He was presiding over a three-day State-level workshop on “Quality development of education through community participation” organised by the Department of Development Studies of the university in association with Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan here.

Dr. Narayan said that it was a matter of concern that government and aided-schools were unable to improve the quality of education and private schools were gaining an upper hand in this regard.

Marginal community

He said government and aided-schools were catering to 40 per cent of the population, which he termed marginal community. In such circumstances, it was essential for the participants to clearly spell out the definition of community participation and quality and also the role of teachers, students and parents and the community to improve the quality of education. In addition, the workshop should also discuss in detail and chalk-out a plan of action as to when, where, how and by whom the needed intervention had to be made for qualitative development of education, he said.

Stating that the university had brought to the notice of the Government that it was keen on making a detailed study on the problems facing the education sector and come out with solutions, Dr. Narayan appealed to the Government to set up a study centre here for the purpose.

Inaugurating the workshop, Kumar Nayak, Commissioner for Education, said that the Government had been doing its best to improve the literacy rate and the quality of education and had come out with several programmes, including total literacy campaign, DPEP and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA). He hoped that the workshop would come out with solutions to improve the quality of education.

Priority

L.K. Atheek, Project Director SSA, said that the Government had accorded priority to education and had taken steps to improve infrastructure in schools.

H.D. Prasanna, Professor and Head of Department of Development Studies, welcomed the gathering.

Janardhan proposed a vote of thanks.
