NEW DELHI: A final year under-graduate student of Maulana Azad Medical College here has been admitted to a Noida hospital with dengue fever. The condition of Saurabh Kumar, a day scholar at MAMC, is said to be critical. While the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here reported the largest number of dengue cases from any single institution in the Capital last year, no cases have been reported from the Institute so far this year. “We admitted seven patients with suspected dengue this past week of which two were confirmed cases. We want to caution people that though increased awareness has resulted in people protecting themselves against mosquitoes at home and offices, public places where water collection is present are vulnerable areas. People should try and be vigilant and protect themselves against mosquito bites outside as well,” said Bir Singh, Professor of Community Medicine and convenor of Diseases Prevention and Outbreak Response Cell. Students and their parents have demanded that medical colleges in the Capital ensure a dengue-free environment. 11 dengue, 18 chikungunya cases
Delhi has reported 11 cases of dengue and 18 cases of chikungunya so far this year. A State Health Department official said: “The situation is not alarming at all and our awareness programme seems to have had a positive effect on the public who are more vigilant and are reporting to hospitals earlier.”
