State IMA too takes serious view

VHP leader’s remarks on foeticide decried

BHUBANESWAR: Orissa’s medical fraternity, which has so far been at receiving end in the wake of twin controversies surrounding female foeticide and fake drug cases, has finally reacted saying that “doctors should not be singled out.”

After holding an emergency executive body meeting here recently, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Bhubaneswar, said: “the team behind such dirty activity (killing of foetuses) is none other than parents, abettors, connivers and facilitators and finally doctors. All of them should be taken to task without singularly blaming the doctors.”

The IMA said it stood firmly by the national PNDT Act and other regulatory acts on such matter and all the cases should be properly investigated with spirit of malice to none.

Drug cases

Coming to fake drug cases, it said the branch wholeheartedly resolved to cooperate for implementation of State rule regulating of clinical establishments. “Since the rule was lying dormant for long 17 years, the branch emphasises to gear up the government machinery for hassle-free issue of licence through a single window delivery system.”

Several doctors of the capital city were alleged to be involved in female foeticide cases with crime branch of State police chasing them.

“The unpalatable language used by the media to sensationalise the issue is defaming the noble profession," president of IMA, Bhubaneswar, Bijaya Kumar Mishra said.

Besides, the IMA said that it was actively considering exploring legal action against Viswa Hindu Parishad leader Swamy Laxmanananda, who reportedly remarked at a BJP meeting at Puri: “chase the erring doctors and hack them to death.” Even as the Crime Branch was investigating into the case, such derogatory and provocative utterance could only induce public irritation, the association said expressing concern over the remarks in presence of State Law Minister.
