Rain: several rivers in spate

BHUBANESWAR: The torrential rain that continued under the influence of depression for the past three days left several rivers swelling and leading to fear of floods particularly in some pockets of southern and interior region of Orissa.

As per the reports reaching here, three districts such as Gajapati, Rayagada and Kalahandi were affected due to heavy rains lashed the regions since Monday morning. Junagarh in Kalahandi district was cut off from all sides with floodwater flowing over Hati River at several places.

Similarly, Rayagada-Koraput Road was disconnected due to collapse of a bridge under heavy rain. The road between Gunupur and Paralakhemundi was also reported to have been cut off.

Water entered Gudari town of Rayagada district as a breach occurred on Vanshadhara River. Floodwaters topped the Bhubaneswar- Bhanjanagar road at Nuagam disrupting traffic.

Meanwhile, the State Revenue Control Room said the casualty in the heavy rain had gone up to 17, of which 13 were killed in lightning. The control room said highest rainfall of 35 cm was recorded in Ummerkote and it was followed by 24 cm in Bhanjangar. Nabrangpur and Junagarh also experienced heavy rainfalls during last 24 hours. They received 23 cm of rainfall each. Heavy rainfalls were recorded in Jayapatna, Aska, Gudari and Kotgarh areas.

According to flood control room bulletin, water was flowing over danger level at three places. Water level was measured to be at 84.90 metre at Gunupur against its danger mark 84 metre. Similarly, water was flowing just above the danger mark at Kashinagar. Both the places are in Vanshadhara River system.

At Purusottampur on Rushikulya River, water level was measured at 17.50 m against danger mark of 16.84 metre. Incidentally, water was on receding trend at all the three places.

The flood control room said heavy to very heavy falls were likely to occur at a few places over Upper Mahanadi and isolated places over Lower Mahanadi catchments during the next 48 hours.
