NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party would petition Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami for removal of Election Commissioner Navin Chawla “as early as possible,” party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said here on Tuesday. EC’s stand
This was decided after the BJP withdrew its complaint before the Supreme Court in view of the stand taken by Mr. Gopalaswami that he had the power to remove an Election Commissioner by taking suo motu action or on receipt of a compl aint in the interest of upholding free and fair elections and ensuring impartiality of the Commission. The BJP had earlier sent a complaint against Mr. Chawla to the President that was forwarded to the Government by him. Change in approach
It had also moved the Supreme Court asking for directions to the Government that its complaint be forwarded to the CEC. In view of the CEC’s stand that he has the powers to directly take action, the BJP has decided to approach Mr. Gopalaswami.
