Saurav Ghosal confident of breaking into top 20

Principal Correspondent

KOLKATA: National champion and the highest ranked Indian in professional squash, Saurav Ghosal, is confident he will be able to make it to the top 20 of the PSA World rankings in another two years.

Ghosal, who is currently ranked 41 in the world, said he has reached a level where is confident of challenging players in the top 20 of the world rankings.

The 20-year-old player with three national titles to his credit said his game has improved vastly under the coaching of Malcolm Willstrop.

Ghosal, who is currently based in Leeds, has been training under the world renowned coach while continuing his under-graduation course.

“I have to play well consistently and beat players in the elite bracket in the world rankings,” he said.

Improved game

“My stay in UK has helped me better my professional career. This has greatly improved my game and increased my self belief. I hope by 2009 I would be able to break into the top 20.”

Ghosal, who became the world No. 1 as a junior, said the prolonged exposure to top-level squash is “proving good” and he hoped he would remain injury-free to enable him to fulfil his aim of breaking into the top 20.

“It is only then that I would be able to get direct entry into the main draws of the big world events,” he said.

Ghosal, who is here for a break, said he would resume his professional tour itinerary with the $22,000 CAS International in Islamabad later this month.

In September he would be playing the English Grand Prix in Birmingham before trying his luck in the two Super Series events — British Open and U.S. Open — scheduled in the same month.
