dated August 9, 1957: VOC memorial

The Madras Chief Minister, Mr. K. Kamaraj, laid the foundation stone for the VOC Memorial at Ottapidaram at 5-30 p.m. on August 7 in commemoration of the freedom struggle centenary celebrations. The function was attended by thousands of people from neighbouring villages. In his speech, Mr. Kamaraj said Tirunelveli district was the birthplace of many patriots and it was fitting that the first celebration of the freedom struggle centenary should be inaugurated here.
